Fortnite Lawsuit: How to Get Your Share of Fortnite’s $245M Settlement

Well, for those who play or played Fortnite at some point in their lives, they know that it is actually the Epic Games company that is behind this game. But now, in 2025, we’re seeing this company get into some serious trouble with the United States government, and to be specific, it has something to do with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Why FTC? Well, as per the details of this Fortnite Lawsuit that are already out, the company was caught doing something shady related to in-game purchases. To be specific here, well, the players of this game were being charged real money, sometimes without them even realizing it. And since usually the players who play this game are kids, their parents are really concerned about them spending real money on a game, and that too, without even knowing.

When Did This Happen?

This was not a one-off error. The matters existed ever since 2017 and persisted until 2022. The complaints by the FTC allege that many unauthorized purchases were made by minors from January 2017 to November 2018, raising much concern from parents.

Then, late in December 2022, the FTC took some action. Epic Games agreed to $520 million in settlement, and it became one of the largest fines ever in the history of the gaming industry.

How the $520 Million Settlement Was Split

Out of the total amount:

• $275 million was paid as a penalty for violating COPPA (Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act).
• $245 million was set aside for refunds to affected players.

The process for refunds started in December 2024. That time, $72 million was paid out. Another $126 million was disbursed by June 2025, with a possibility of more to come. So far, about $198 million has been paid.

Are You Eligible for a Refund?

You might qualify if:

• Between January 2017 and September 2022, you mistakenly purchased the Fortnite game.
• Between January 2017 and November 2018, your child never asked but used your card.
• Disputing a charge after which your account was locked.

Keep in mind, refunds are restricted to U.S. residents. If you’re 18 years old or less and have any refunding complaint, your parent or guardian needs to conduct the refunding procedure.

How to Claim Your Refund

The process is simple. Just follow these steps:

1. Visit the official refund site: https://www.fortniterefund.com
2. File your claim using either:

• Your FTC claim number (if you received one by email), or
• Your Epic Games account ID

3. Filing is free. Never surrender your password or deliver any sensitive information. If anyone demands it, then it is a scam; thus, you should skip it altogether.
4. When your claim is approved, you will get your refund through PayPal or through the mail as a check payment. There is a limited timeframe to redeem these payments, like, in the case of PayPal: within 30 days, or in the case of a check: within 90 days, or else they will expire.

What Did Epic Say So Far?

Responding to the matter, Epic stated that gaming has probably evolved faster than some laws treating it. The statement further said that their enforcement has changed while the laws themselves have not.

Another thing they added was their application to newer systems and policies that would prevent a repetition of such issues.
